Navigation Map & Compass Course
 
KEEPERS Level #1 BASIC NAVIGATION COURSE MAP & COMPASS
LENGTH :                             8 HOURS  
TIMINGS:                             9 am - 5 pm (SATURDAY)
TRANSPORTATION:         PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION
Participants meet at the Tim Hortons in Capreol (29 Reg. Rd.84, Capreol) at 0845am.
 
ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SIGN A RELEASE OF LIABILITY AGREEMENT & ASSUMPTION OF RISK WAIVER.  THIS LEGAL PAPERWORK IS REQUIRED BY OUR COMPANY TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR EVENTS.
 
PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE NORTH OF CAPREOL OUTSIDE OF CELLULAR COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES about 15-20mins ride down MOOSE MOUNTAIN MINE RD. at IRONSIDE LAKE Rd. and or area.
 
Hands on bush navigation course. Students will learn how to use the universal transverse Mercator grid system as well as the military grid system. They will also learn how to read and use grid coordinates to give their position on a map or locate a position given to them on a map. They will also learn all the details, colors, symbols etc. found on a map.
 
Students will then be introduced to the use of a compass including how to set or correct for magnetic declination, how to set or create bearings and back bearings. How to use a map and compass in combination to route plan and navigate to their destination. All students will navigate through a set of coordinates given to them to an "in Bush" destination using a map and compass while in the company of an instructor to experience navigation in the "real" to dispel myths, expose problems and present solutions to bolster the overall confidence of the student. By the end of the day students from previous classes felt empowered and confident that they could navigate to destinations they previously would never have attempted as long as they had a map of the area and a compass.
 
Instructor #1: Mike Paquette (age 67) - 13yrs as a search and rescue coordinator responsible for training police and civilian search and rescue personnel in land navigation. Also lifelong bush person who has personally used a map and compass to navigate to remote bush locations for 40+ years.
 

Participants should dress appropriately for off trail "bush whacking" ie. clothing appropriate for existing and forecast weather conditions. Clothing that covers the legs and arms to protect against bugs, abrasions, and scratches. Appropriate footwear is essential. Footwear designed for hiking or hunting. No sandals, flip flops or running shoes!! Participants are also required to bring their own compass!! If you don't own a compass contact us and we will try to accommodate you.
 
Upon arrival participants check inn with our guide(s) and hand inn their signed (Release of Liability Agreements & Assumption of Risk Waiver) and pay any outstanding balances.
 
Soon as we have everybody or latest departure 900 am we depart and head north of Capreol in caravan (following the guide vehicle) to Ironside Lake Road or area.

Vehicles will be left parked and all participants will gather in one small group upon arrival and the event will begin. At the end of the day participants will be free to make their way back to town the same way we used to go but on their own time as sometimes the guide(s) don’t return back to town right away.
