Navigation ( Map & Compass ) Course 
KEEPERS Level #1 BASIC NAVIGATION COURSE MAP & COMPASS
LENGTH :         5 HOURS  
TIMINGS:        12pm - 5 pm (SATURDAY)

 

⦁    Introduction
⦁    Compasses & types ( how they work / demos / hands on )
⦁    How to use a compass ( setting declination, shooting bearings, pacing)
⦁    Walking with compass skills
⦁    Using compass with a MAP
⦁    MAPS (how to read & operate a map)
⦁    MAP types and other navigational tricks and tips
⦁    How to navigate through the forest using MAP and compass and "in the real" skills     and methods one should use to navigate (proper ways to navigate using your     couscious thought combined with trusting your equipment and using it correctly.
⦁    How to navigate over obstacles or forced detours
⦁    Triangulation and how to find your way out when lost
⦁    Practical forest walk using map and compass in the real


TRANSPORTATION:         PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN 

 

Participants meet at intersection of Lumsden Rd & Monte Coutu to then follow the guide vehicle to our private property bush property & Harmony Homesteadtead retreat / training center ) BLEZARD VALLEY AREA.

 

 ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST SIGN A RELEASE OF LIABILITY AGREEMENT & ASSUMPTION OF RISK WAIVER.  THIS LEGAL PAPERWORK IS REQUIRED BY OUR COMPANY TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR EVENTS.

 

​Knowing how to navigate in the outback is a valuable skill to have. To find your bearings when you get turned around or lost or for use to navigate thru the woods to get to a specific destination. Knowing how to use a compass & to combine the use of compass with a map. 

This course teaches you how to read and make sense of the information on maps and how to utilize your compass with a map. This also teaches you how to map out a trip and how to examine a maps features so you know what obstacles you may half to deal with along the way. Rocky steep terrain, water obstacles, railways, and more… This course is held in a field setting with a classroom portion and then practical application exercises. Group walks using navigation skills to find points and to apply knowledge’s learnt in class. This course also covers some simple non compass and map navigation skills to find your direction as well.


The event is casual bush walking in small group settings.  Dress according to the weather and be ready to walk and learn some navigation skills.   This event is a bring your own lunch and depart at supper hour.   This is a great and essential skill to have if you plan on spending time wandering in the outback.  

 
BE PREPARED TO USE A FIELD WASHROOM (compost off grid style at our homestead and training center ) or TO " GO IN THE BUSH" AS THERE WILL NOT BE ANY OFFICIAL WASHROOM FACILITIES OUT IN THE BUSH.   BRING YOURSELF TOILET PAPER OR KLEENEX

Feel free to ask questions if you are unclear about the terms of the forms or anything else you may have questions about.  The forms are mandatory for us if we wish to host activities due to liability reasons.  Therefore we will not take people onto our activities without having them signed.

 

For this event the mandatory paperwork to be filed and turned inn are as follows:

⦁    Release of Liability and Assumption of Risk Agreement
⦁    (Please note the clothing and recommended equipment lists for activities by season)
⦁    ALSO Bring photo Id to the event to check in and confirm your identity /confirm participants information on the Release of Liability & Assumption of Risk Agreement as well as the participant registration form.

 

The forms essentially state that you cannot sue us for any reason whatsoever if you wish to participate in our activities.  The forms also put the onus on you to assume the risks related to these types of activities and therefore you are participating at your own risk and release us of any liabilities. These forms are also standard practice in this industry across Canada.
